Life has felt very full lately. Our days are filled with getting outside and enjoying the rather warm weather, delicious fruits that are gracing our market shelves, and pick-your-own fields. We've been harvesting neighborhood flowers and visiting the fancy cliffs of Maryland. Who knew we had these amazing cliffs and beaches so close by. I must say that these boys of mine really get me out exploring and I think I am just as excited as they are when find something as great as this.

Time Flies

Where oh where has the time gone? I remember, like it was yesterday, when this lovely friend told me she was pregnant with her second child. And here she is on the verge of meeting that little one, just days from now. And where am I in the mix of it all. I am still working on being the best mother I can be and trying to sneak in time for this much loved hobby of photography {soon to be part-time profession}. I feel that there is a transition in the air these days. There are family chats about jobs, houses, and upcoming birthdays. Is this typical spring like behavior? Is this a time of newness for anyone else?

Oh how I am loving the warm weather. We have been outside a ton this week which has made the week fly by. There have been fresh flowers in the house and some soon to bloom outside. Gardening is on the agenda for the upcoming week and the ongoing spring cleaning is making the house sparkle. Are you all loving the weather?

Where have wee been? Two weeks have passed and here I am at ten o'clock writing a blog post. Life has once again eaten away at out time. I rarely sit down at the computer during day light hours which leaves me just two short hours or so at night. And really, I don't feel like doing much once the sun has gone down since I have been up since the crack of dawn. No complaints, but just a little explanation. I am feeling like I am at a crossroads with my life as a mommy blogger. Will I continue or will it fall by the wayside, or will it transition {via a new blog} into my business blog sometime in the near future?

This is one of three bands I wear on my wedding ring finger. I have my platinum wedding band, a super thin white gold antique band, and this sterling silver number. When I got married years ago I thought a big hunky diamond was what I needed and wanted. Fast forward almost ten years, and two kids later, and life has changed me. It's not about what you've got...it how you use it!

Today's theme was to snap a pic of something that represented our love's dreams. Now before you think that I chose this picture because I am the woman of my husband's dreams, let me explain. This a self portrait that I took this afternoon. It was a far from perfect day and I, ready for this, am a far from perfect woman. And today, I really felt like an imperfect woman and realized that is okay.

So my dream is that each day I am a little better than I was the day before. Maybe it will be that I improve my cooking a bit, get a bit funnier, dress a bit nicer, or give a bit more. I like the challenge of becoming a better person and knowing that if I didn't do it quite right today, I can do it better tomorrow. So that is my dream. What is yours?

The theme of today's challenge was "where my LOVE is comfortable." I should have snapped a pick of hubby on the couch because, yep, that his favorite spot. Instead I chose hubby's work from home space. After two other spots in the house he now works out of the walk in closet in the master bedroom. It's not exactly a typical work space, but it is the quietest spot in the house and our kids can get LOUD. Do your loved ones have comfy spots in your house? Do you?

I Love...A Good Challenge

I do love a good challenge although I do not consider myself to be a competitive person. I actually like to steer clear of competitive folks as it gives me bad taste in my mouth. However, hubby and I will both admit to be competitive with ourselves. Do you know what I mean? When hubby was swimmer back in the day he says he never tried to beat the other guys, but strived to beat his late time. And me, I am always working on making myself better at something. Perhaps because I don't feel I excel at any one thing.

This leads me to the guitar, which is a whole post in it's self. Hubby proclaimed, on Tuesday night, that he'd like to learn to play the guitar. The next day I thought I'd post a want-ad on FreeCycle and this beauty is what came home with us a week later. It is an amazing story which I will write about later. For now, this is the new love of my hubby's free time. And oh what joy it is to hear the strings getting strummed each night after dinner.

I really do love that we live a stone's throw from Washington DC. It took us a while to get out the door this morning, but in about 30 minutes we were in DC walking across the National Mall on our way to the National Gallery of Art. In art class, the boys have learned about various artists. Last week they studied Andy Warhol, and while we didn't see his work up close, we saw an artist outside the museum who replicated Warhol's style. I love being able to share these treasure's with the boys, along with my love of the city.

How could I not write about my love for these two cuties? Lately I have been in love with the little moments of true connectedness they share. I see glimpses into what I hope to be the strongest relationship they will ever have with someone their own age. They can be as different as night and day and as similar as two peas from the same pod. They challenge me every day and have made me grow in ways I never imagined. I love that we are all making each other better people.

Winter

It has been super cold here, but strangely I have been dreaming of going to the beach. Not the hot, sand in your toes beach, but the cool crisp snow covered beach we visited last winter. Perhaps it will warm up just a bit this weekend for us to take a visit.

But since I have been inside and sitting at my computer let me share what I have been looking at lately. I just adore Ohdeedoh and find this entry very interesting. Here is where we are now. Fever struck our house yesterday with a bang and there has been a lot of sleeping in the big bed ever since. For the first time I am trying to just ride out the fever with little medicine. We are trying to fill our bodies with nourishing foods, but it is slow going for the sick one who has very little appetite.

And here I am, done with two college courses and ready to dive into the world of homeschooling. I am eighty percent sure the boys won't be in public school next year so I had better start preparing. I am excited and nervous. I'll be sure to keep you all posted.

This is another wonder of Photo Booth. We discovered the mirror image effect and were rolling on the floor with laughter. It may become a staple in our house because laughing this hard is so good for the soul, and as way for two, often rival, four year olds to bond. Ahhh, sometimes something so simple can be so wonderful.

ps. For some news on my career path...I have completed my six credits to renew my school counseling license. A huge accomplishment for me. And tomorrow I am off on my first photography job of the year, a referral from a friend. Yeah!

Oh happy snow! We got about two inches or so, just enough to cover the grass well and make for a fun morning of outside play and picture taking.

And last night I made this snowflake tree that see above. While taking down the Christmas decorations on Sunday the boys asked me what decorations we put up next. This is what I came up with for January.

One of the benefits of being a family that wakes up early in the morning is being able to greet the day as the sun rises in the sky. And today I couldn't have thought of a better way to greet the first day of a new year by capturing the sunrise with my family. A little holiday gift to myself was finishing this chalkboard for the kitchen. Can you see the excited drawings that grace this under $10.00 project? I have wanting to do this for ages. I got the chalkboard paint from FreeCycle and the frame, with pressboard picture, for $5.00. I found some silver leaf paint in my craft bin last week and with an hour a chalkboard was born. Here is the before picture...take a second look at those unattractive pictures at the thrift store.

I made these a month ago from an old sweater the boys wore once. It has a whole in it and I was about to give it charity. I see so many adorable newborn hats when I am interning and when I am looking for photography inspiration.

The top hat is just a square with two pom-poms sewn to the corners. The bottom hat is a rectangle that is gathered about an inch from the top. I zig-zagged the cut end and the bottom of both is the hem of the sweater. Easy peasy and definitely my new favorite craft. I have quite the pile of old wool, cotton, and cashmere sweaters.

We have all been sick here for the past five days. We all wanted to stay close to home today and take it easy, but by midday we itching for something different to do. Our morning consisted of dancing around the yard to the first visible snowfall. There was less than a dusting, but it was definitely something to two exuberant four year olds.

When our afternoon lull hit we started on some holiday gifts for the grandmas and teachers. I came across these angels a few nights ago and fell in love. Thankfully I had all the supplies on hand and figured if I Mod Podge them onto cracker boxes that they will make swell bookmarks or ornaments. These were super easy for the boys to glue together and the faces that they drew are just adorable. I'll be sure to share the finished products.

Where of where has the past month gone? Where have I been? Oh how I wish I could tell you that I was swept away to a tropical island and that I have been basking in the sun all day. But no, life just got the better of me over the past month. Hubby was gone for a total of ten days, my folks came in for Thanksgiving, and I have been finishing up my classwork along with assisting on several photo shoots. Oh, and there has been a lot of kid stuff going on.

I can't believe the holidays are almost here. I have one weekend left to get most of my stuff done. My in-laws are coming into town in a week and then we are off to Florida the following week. I hope to get a ton of crafting done in between now and then. I can't wait to share with you what I have been working on...

What an amazing morning at the Natural History Museum. Every Tuesday they have free admission to the butterfly exhibit which is amazing. Butterflies fluttering everywhere and landing on heads, shoulders, and jackets. They were all over the walls, floors, and finding in the plants. Truly a magical experience for both big and little people.

Oh I think black and white was the only way to go with this shot. We made ghost costumes yesterday afternoon at about 3pm. Prior to that we were talking Batman, astronaut, R2-D2, or C-3PO. I was thrilled when they both agreed upon ghost costumes. And I am so thankful that people think kids look cute in just about anything.

Before the first house both boys had the costumes off their faces and just over their heads (think sheik). By the time we got to the fifth house we had wrapped the sheets around the boys into what looked like a cross between a toga and a mummy. There was so much excitement over candy and being out at night that they could have cared less and no one seemed to mind that they had ghetto ghost costumes, except me.

Thankfully this picture cracks me up. They insisted on being friendly ghosts and the little smile cut-out gives me a chuckle. I sure hope you had a great Halloween. Stay tuned for our candy update...

Oh I got to meet this very lovely lady, and her hubby, on Saturday morning. And let me say she is even more beautiful, inside and out, in person. We had a quick breakfast, because that's how breakfast goes with my guys, and a lovely stroll down Independence Ave to the Botanical Gardens. A short, but very lovely visit.

A whole lot of sick is in our house as the first rounds of colds hit us. I made a batch of Kyndale's ginger syrup and we have been using it as tea all week. It is yummy with just enough bite, but not too much that the boys refuse to drink it. I have mixed it with a cinnamon herbal tea and even the big daddy of our house is drinking it.

It was a full weekend and I can't wait to share with you all who I met. Hopefully I will have more time for blogging this week. My big project is finished and big daddy is back in the house.

Something about this time of year always makes me reflective. Right now I am reflecting on where we live. If you don't know we moved to this part of Maryland a bit over a year and a half ago. We moved an hour away from where we had lived for six years. We moved to be closer to hubby's job. We moved because the houses were bigger and the pace of life was slower. I have gone up and down with my feelings for this place. And while many of my friends and family know that I am itching to move pack to VA, to a smaller house and a faster pace, I am seeing some great things about where we are right now.

I picked up my camera this morning and thought, I really know how to use it and it's because a friend down the street sparked my interest in photography. I took the boys to their new school a few days ago to fill out paperwork and was comforted to know that they are getting an education in music, movement, and art. Right now I am happy to say we live down the street from two farmers that let us hang out with their kittens on a grey afternoon.

I live in a pretty great place even thought I know it is not exactly where I want to be. So where are you these days?

Well despite my efforts to live with less I brought home a few cuties this weekend. Oour neighbors were throwing out this great truck with Monday's trash. I happened to be sitting outside their house watching the boys ride bikes when out they came out, so I asked if I could lug it home. It is in great shape and will add nicely to my set of photography props.

The other little gem is a ceramic bell, a bit risky with two four year olds, but I just loved the color and I couldn't beat the $1.50 price tag. We now ring the bell for meals and bath time. It worked like a charm to get the boys inside and upstairs for their bath last night. I didn't even say a word. Oh how I wish I had a bell years ago!

Well friends I have been delinquent in my blogging and my blog reading lately. The shift in seasons and the shift away from summer frolicking has my free time cut down to the bare minimum. Luckily I was able to make some free time this weekend to visit my dear friend new arrival. Do you remember my first, and so far only, maternity shoot? Well Sunday I was blessed with the opportunity to do my first newborn shoot. I had such a great time and and even better time looking over the hundred images I got. Does this ever happen to you? A drawer full of the bits and pieces that randomly migrate to the kitchen counter, floor, and odd corners of your house. When I was a kid we used to call this our "junk" drawer. Junk perfectly fits the contents of this drawer. Thankfully the other day I got to clean this drawer out on Friday along with my closet. What a good feeling to declutter and organize. I am working really hard on getting things out that are unneeded or no longer useful. I am also working on finding a place for everything so that we have an easier time finding things. Oh, and labels...those are coming too. Stay tuned later this week for the after picture of this drawer. And come back tomorrow...it's a very special day in our house.

Inside :: Outside

Here's a peak into life in our little corner. The other afternoon they boys were found sitting together reading. It warmed my heart and reminded me of their special bond. And in the mornings, almost every morning, we can be found in our driveway or along the sidewalk biking back and forth. I do love that these boys know how to be constructive with their energy.

In other news, our mornings have been starting way too early and after a call to the pediatrician we will hopefully get it worked out soon. Afternoon school has been hard on everyone these past few weeks. The boys are yawning on the ride over and a cranky mess when they return. Hopefully we can fix this glitch too.

But with all that said life is good to us. Life is full. The next few months will be filled with a mix of visits from extended family, special Autumn outings, and a bit of couple time.

This picture was actually taken back in July. I had a photography class in Georgetown which got canceled due to rain after I had already walked a mile in it. The guys came in to meet me for some yummies and exploration around the city.

I pulled this picture up a few days ago because the boys need a family photo for class. This is the only one I have of all of us that is recent. And I think it represents up well. I will probably always describe our style as "hobo chic". Not only does it describe our fashion style, but kind of our lifestyle too. I have been thinking a lot about our parenting philosophy lately and trying to find a good balance for everyone. It's been a challenge these last few weeks. I sure hope life is going smoothly for all of you.

I have so many thoughts swirling around in my mind right now and not enough time to devote to any of them. We are going through many transitions in our home and I should have know that it would be hard on all of us, especially me.

Here is a photo taken about two years ago this month. I have no idea where the past two years have gone. I thought by now I'd have things figured out, ha! I thought I'd be some place different, literally and figuratively. I thought this year I'd continue to have my little brood with me at home and here I am sending them off to school.

The past four years I have monitored their every move and seen just about every action and reaction. Now I will have no idea what kind of interactions they are having moment to moment, person to person. This is what scares me the most. They still have so many things to learn about being people. I am sure we will all adjust and grow from this experience. So many of us do it, but I am such a protective and worrisome mother bird that letting my babies fly out of the nest is more challenging than I ever imagined. Sorry boys, you've got one crazy mom on your hands.

So all that to say that tomorrow starts the great clean out of 2010. I am on a kick to straighten up our house and get rid of all the excess, and I mean all. With the boys gone for two hours I plan to begin what I am sure will be a long process. I'll be sure to keep you updated on the progress.

This cutie pie has been playing with the boys since they were born. It is really fun to see them grow up together. Our dear friend came to play this morning and almost immediately starting picking dandelions. I have an image of her with the bunch in her hands almost as if they were a bridal bouquet. And when I asked her to stop and pose for me, she did. I think I am ready to start offering my photography services to folks other than my family.

This sweetie pie has come back to roost in our home. About one year ago we let her go live with my parents, partly because she was an added stressor in my life and partly because one of their dogs had died. Recently the boys having asking to have a pet, and each time our sweet Glory would come to visit they would ask if she could stay. They know she is their dog and have started to take such pride in walking her and feeding her. So last weekend when she came to visit with my folks we asked for her back. This sweet girl is definitely adding a lot of joy to our days.

Life has been full this week with so many things. Let me update you on a few...

the boys are signed up and ready to go to school next week.
i am the new editor of the newsletter for their school which has eaten away at all my computer time (submitted yesterday).
the boys are officially no longer nappers and we are all adjusting to "quiet" time.
i completed the second week of my college class, psychology of parenthood.
the boys survived their 4 year well child check up yesterday which took over two hours.
i survived my physical this morning and am all good except for a vitamin D deficiency...hmmm.
finally we madly cleaned yesterday for the arrival of my folks.
and now a bit of down time since hubby has the next three days off.

August 27 : This Moment

Nope, not my belly, but one of a good friend. Monday night I went to dinner with my 34 week pregnant friend and was lucky enough to take some shots of her gorgeous belly.

We had the best backdrop, Old Town, and the best weather. But I was anything but the best photographer. This was my first shoot so what did I expect, to feel like a pro? I kept questioning how to position her, where to stand, what angle to shoot at and I thought maybe I got one good shot.

Low and behold, after seeing them up on the big screen and messing around with some basic editing I am thrilled to have ten wonderful shots taken in about a half hour. I will be curious to hear what my gorgeous model thinks. I think she is a beautiful model and will be a beautiful mother.

We ventured into Old Town Alexandria this morning to visit some of our favorite friends. In Old Town even the entrances to parking lots look pretty and historic. This has to one of my favorite spots and we'd live here in a heartbeat if the school were better. Alexandria is the first place I lived when I moved to the DC area back in the late 90's. Ugh that makes me old doesn't it.

Are you expecting to read a list of 100 things about me? Did you think I made a typo? No typo and I don't think I could possibly come up with 100 interesting things about myself. 100 things is something that has been on my mind for about a week now. Last week my hubby mentioned a New York Times article about a challenged to live with just 100 things. The article sparked a wonderful conversation between the two of us and has me on a kick to clear out all the extra stuff that goes weeks, months, and years without being used. So far here are some of things that I have donated or freecyled to others...

three bags of clothes, four glass food containers, two sets of sheets, four crib sheets, a well loved toy parking garage

Things still to get rid of...

various vases, two lamp bases, a cozy coupe, an electric blanket, more clothes, more kitchen items, baskets, and many more undiscovered things

I don't know that I can narrow things down to just 100, but I am really interested in seeing if I can continue to whittle down the unused items that clutter our house and garage. I am trying to get over the idea of sentiment in place of practicality. Once I am done with the big purge I'd like to make an inventory of all my stuff. How many items will I have?

Yesterday I was so excited to receive a package all the way from CA. About a week ago I entered a giveaway over at Salt and Chocolate, a favor blog o' mine. I got my entry in just under the wire and was the lucky one chosen to recieve a copy of Eating for Beginners, perfect for me and my little family. More than anything though, I was touched by the sweet postcard Mary Beth included with the book.

I learned a long time ago not to spend a lot of money on clothes for my boys. My guys like to get dirty, change outfits at least twice a day, and grow pretty quickly. Therefore most of their clothes come from the thrift store or yard sales. The unfortunate part is that puts their fashion style in the category of rag-o-muffin chic. Long hair and clothes that often don't match and are a bit too big is our current style.

Today I attempted to put a bit of style back into their wardrobes with these little pirate shorts. The shorts took 15 minutes to sew including all the details. The best part is that they started out life as a freebie shirt hubby got at a conference. You know that free shirt with some company logo on it. Well thanks to the tutorial I posted about a few days back those shirts turned into shorts.

Here's a yummy recipe enjoyed by all and I made it gluten free.

Dry ingredients:
1 cup coconut flour
1 1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 Tb cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg

Wet ingredients:
1/2 cup coconut oil
1/2 cup honey
1 Tb molasses
1 egg (we added an extra)
1 tsp vanilla

Extras:
1/2 cup chopped dried apricots or raisins (dried apricots have a much lower glycemic index)

Mix dry ingredients together then add wet ingredients and apricots. Cool the mixture in the fridge for 20 minutes. Preheat oven to 335 degrees. Drop by the spoonful and press down with a fork. Bake for 15-20 minutes. I then freeze the cookies and eat them cold. They tend to be very crumbly, but freezing them makes them stay together really well. Yum!

ps. We are not a gluten free family, but I do try and substitute gluten free if I can.

Yet another busy week leaving this blog to fall by the wayside. I am afraid that as the fall approaches it will fall even further. I am trying to juggle being a good wife, being home full time, an internship, friendships, and in a few weeks two college classes. Ugh, notice how blogging didn't even make it onto that list. Somehow it will all balance out, but just know I am enjoying reading all of your blogs even though you might not be reading much on mine.

I'll leave you with a cute little fellow who spend a few days with us over the weekend. We were thrilled to dog sit for a friend. Moses quickly became a part of our family.

I got into a sewing groove a few nights back and whipped out two pairs of shorts. They took about twenty minutes to sew and they couldn't be cuter. Apparently I cut out the pattern last summer and never got around to sewing them. I unearthed the pieces a few days ago when I was going through my drawers of fabric. We can't have enough shorts around here. Most days each of the boys have at least two clothing changes because of spills, dirt, or just because it is a different time of day. There is a really cute and easy tutorial for boys shorts/pants over at rookie mom. Next time I make a pair I will use her trick and omit the side seam. Check it out to see what I mean

Well I think I have told you all that life has been pretty full lately. We've had a big birthday weekend with family followed by a visit from a good friend, and then my family back visiting. Mixed in with that I have been interning with a newborn/maternity photographer in the area. And now hubby's family is coming into town on Friday. Juggling all this with very little free time is definitely a challenge and that is why my dear family blog is being a bit neglected. Thank goodness I can peek in at all of you and say hello.

The past week has been filled with loads of fun, family, and a break from our normal quiet lives. We have seen four friendly faces come and go from our home, two dogs come and stay, and lots of partying with all. Today life has quieted down for a bit, but guests are coming for dinner and in a few days my parents return. I love all this business because the boys just love it! And for me it fills my days with good conversation and good company.

Life is feeling very full lately. We just completed the a weekend long celebration for the boys' fourth birthday. My parents drove up from Jacksonville and my brother flew in from San Francisco. There was swimming, two special dinners, cake, presents, walks with the dogs, a trip to Bass Pro, and tons of play time. A great time was had by all.

Here's a peek at my Saturday. I was scheduled to take an awesome all day photography class in Georgetown. And to make a long story short, after walking a mile in the pouring rain I found that it was canceled. Sounds pretty dreadful, but I actually didn't mind the walk in the rain. There was something so peaceful and so youthful about it.

The silver lining of the day was that my boys drove down to meet me in the city for lunch. After lunch we walked the C&O canal through Georgetown to the Potomac River and back. They boys were great. I got some great shots. And had a blissful day in the city. I hope all of you had some fun this weekend too.

A few flowers to share from a local farm down the street. We passed by on our way to swim lessons and said we'd stop on our way home. We were greeted by two smiling farmers, a barking dog, crowing roosters, several barn cats, and two peacocks. This is the $6 bouquet we put together with the help of one farmer. Yep, these farmers have some fiercely good taste. They may be a weekly stop for the rest of the summer. This is the kind of simple pleasure that feeds my soul.

So let me share with you the lady that has been shedding light on various parenting issues for our family. Dr. Rene Hackney is a parent education specialist in Northern VA. I first met her, years ago, when she gave a presentation to our multiples group. At the time I didn't feel I any parenting issues except sleep deprivation. Now I have two very active and opinionated three year olds. Needless to say I have lots of parenting issues. I am sharing her info with you today because I am an imperfect mother who is always looking for ways to be a better one and maybe you are too. I don't have a lot of time or energy to read books, but I always need more information. Dr. Hackney has helped me tremendously and is a resource that I go back to often. She is now on-line so anyone, anywhere can access her. She has webinars that can be replayed for you and your spouse, hand-outs that can be printed, Q&A sessions that allows you to ask a question directly to her, and she is always adding more.

She hasn't written any books yet, but talks a lot about many current parenting books. She is all about positive language and the impact of it, and it's opposite, on the child. She is extremely calm, laid back and non judgmental. So if any of you are stuck in a parenting rut, have a challenging child, feel you need support please check her out. I really can't say enough great things about her and her beliefs.

Nicola wrote a wonderful post today reviewing her steps, over the past few months, toward balance. I think one of my favorite things about blogging and the reading the blogs of others is finding a this kind connectedness. There is a sense, from some bloggers, of getting to know them on a level that you might not know your everyday friends. I don't always get the chance to share well thought out thoughts with the moms I get together with at the park or the pool. We are usually chasing a kid or two, trying to make sure everyone's needs are met, and keeping everyone out of danger.

So in my attempt at working toward balance over the past few weeks I have decided to turn off my comments {for the time being}. This leaves me the chance to comment, and keep up with my blog friends via their posts, and maybe read a new blog or two. It also keeps me more focused on the words I write and less on the words of my comments. And, as a bonus, it keeps me away from my blackberry because I know their aren't comments to read and respond to. This has been the greatest benefit toward more balance in my life.

I am also trying to balance this role of motherhood, which consumes me, with my role as self. I am taking a class here and there to further my knowledge of photography. I have now met with two area photographers, and one more to come this week. I am planning to have some dates with my hubby when my family comes into town next weekend and the weekend after. It is really nice to feel that the scales are beginning their slide back toward a sense of balance. Even though I know they will still be weighted in the boys' favor for the foreseeable future.

This is the two dollar bouquet that we picked up at the farmer's market over the weekend. We have a pretty dinky market, but we are making a ritual out of going each Sunday morning for a muffin and veggies which are followed by a trip to the park.

Five months back I had my second meeting with Dr. Gwen {the psychic}. She had so many interesting things to say, but one of them was to add more beauty to my life. Actually she was really emphatic about it the first time I met her back in October. I am not sure what I did back then, but lately I have been making sure that there are beautiful flowers on our table each week. Mainly from the gigantic hydrangea bushes outside, but this one just spoke to me.

So much to learn and so little time. I am trying to learn about Photoshop and about taking better pictures in an attempt to give my life a bit of focus outside of being a mom. The boys turn four in about three weeks and I think it is about time I start thinking a bit more about me. Right now I would love to pursue my passion for photography.

Noticing

Last night the boys noticed that our neighbor across the street has a pool. He grew up in the house and now lives there with his 98 year old father. He is a bit of a jack of all trades and definitely lives a different kind of life than we do. He is generous and kind, and what I noticed last night is that despite very different lives we all want a little bit of beauty in our lives.

I am one of those people that likes to have a pretty surrounding. I am simple in my decorating style, love white, and use tons of mirrors instead of art. I like things to be clean and clear of clutter, but alas life with kids brings tons of dirt and lots of clutter.

One of our new family goals is to give the boys more opportunities to contribute to our family life. Not really chores per se, but momentary things to be in charge of because three year olds love to be in charge. This leads me to cleaning....washing to table, vacuuming, sweeping, putting away silverware, etc. Usually if I say, "you can be in charge of_____" they go for it and we all win.

And since cleaning is on the brain today I want you all to know that Nicola's homemade detergent is awesome. I have had the ingredients on my counter for a few weeks, but today everything was combined {in an old yogurt container} and used in the dishwasher. The dishes came out sparkling and feeling incredible. Typically I leave the dishes for my dear hubby to unload, but may now I will be "in charge" of it. Thanks for sharing Nicola.

Now I can't wait to see how it worked on my laundry.

We started our Daddy's Day weekend with a trip to Frederick, MD. We were lucky enough to catch an amazing yard sale which had tons of treasures I wish I could have brought home. The sale is once a month and is made up of two packed barns. Heaven for the country chic bargain hunter. We ended our weekend with our usual Sunday trip to the farmer's market and park.

And this morning we welcomed in summer with homemade blueberry yogurt ice cream for breakfast. If you don't have your own ice cream maker I strongly suggest you put it on your summer wish list. We have a simple hand crank one that turns our yogurt into ice cream in a matter of minutes.

These are the cupcakes I made for my birthday yesterday. Yep, you heard me right, I made my own birthday cupcakes. Hubby is recovering from hand surgery so I took it upon myself to make a delicious treat. {Thankfully we went for birthday ice cream on Thursday night.}

I wonder how many folks would consider a warehouse full of used, cast-off, and overstock housing materials to be their bliss. This weekend hubby and I were able to leave the boys with my mom and head to The Community Forklift on a rainy Sunday afternoon. It was such fun to weave our way through isles of old wood, radiators, kitchen cabinets, doors, and you name it. It is heaven for the frugal do-it-yourselfer, us. We were able to walk out of this place with a small red toolbox, a doorstopper, and a toilet paper holder for around five bucks. Pure bliss!

If you where here yesterday I said that I was in a bit of a funk {mainly due to lack of sleep}. Well when my hubby came home and spontaneously suggested that we head to the beach for a picnic dinner, kite flying, and some good old fashioned digging, my spirits were lifted. The weather was perfect! We had cool dry air and just enough breeze to get that kite way up in the sky. We are truly lucky to have the beach just a short drive away. I just love it when a sour morning turns into a sweet day.

ps. I used my flash on the last two shots. Did you know that even on a bright sunny day you can use your flash? It helps to reduce those shadows from the bright glare of the sun {it's called fill-in flash}. Just remember to use your flash white balance.

Monday::In Search of Summer

Well folks I am doing another no comment week. I am a bit less connected because of it, but in a good way. I no longer feel the need to check in and see if folks commented, and I have less pressure because there aren't comments to respond to.

On another note, it has been one of those days that gets me down. I rarely had these kind of days pre-kids, but find I am prone to getting stuck in ruts since our days of good sleep seem to be behind us {temporarily I hope}. It is a rare morning that someone sleeps past 5:30 around here. And if I am not in bed by 9pm, which I wasn't this weekend, I am bit of a mess during the day that follows. I imagine most folks can relate to this feeling, you know that just wanting to climb back in bed feeling.

So to help keep me out of my funk and in a positive mindset this afternoon I am going to join Nicola in sharing some of my summer manifesto.

Sometimes it is so nice to just sit back and watch, not something I get to do very often. I am what I call "a worker bee". I am always doing something, thinking about something, or have my hands into something. I come from a very industrious family so I suppose I come by it naturally. In many ways it is a gift, but lately I am wondering if it is a bit of a curse. Now I love being a do-it-yourself kind of gal, but I feel like I need to start sitting back a bit more. I guess that is one of my motivations for taking my comments off line for while. I want to lessen load a bit. Now if only my house would clean it's self.

I hope everyone had a weekend filled with magical moments. It feels like we have jumped into summer here in the mid-atlantic. Our weekend was filled with two fun filled days sandwiched between a quiet Sunday trip to the farmers market and park. We ventured into Washington DC to have a fancy brunch with a friend of mine that I haven't seen since fifth grade. It was an incredible morning that I wished lasted longer than just a few hours. The reconnection was immediate and a good time was had by all. I wish I had a good picture to share with all of you, but sadly the lighting was really poor and all our shots look like mud. I do have some beautiful shots of the National Arboretum, since we stopped there on our way home. I also have some fun shots of today's activities which took us from strawberry picking all the way to VA.

And for the something new...I have decided that I am taking off my comments off line for a while. It is a test for me and a way for me to be a little less sucked into this world of blogging. I barely have time to respond to comments these days and I would rather spend my online time visiting more of you. We'll see how it goes.
